With over ten years experience covering the games industry, his work has appeared on GamesRadar+, TechRadar, The Guardian, PLAY Magazine, the papuatoto Sydney Morning Herald, and more. Specific interests include indie games, obscure Metroidvanias, speedrunning, experimental games and FPSs. He thinks Lulu by Metallica and Lou Reed is an all-time classic that will receive its due critical reappraisal one day. Where agency exists it’s in the conversation trees, and Obsidian makes good in this regard. As in Pillars of Eternity, usually my important choices are between two undesirable outcomes, or between lesser and greater evils.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is back for a third time on a new console and proves that the right blend of puzzles and level design can make a game stand the test of time even 15 years after its initial release. Back in 2015, Xenoblade Chronicles X was a huge RPG that strayed away from the usual formula of the series. This Definitive Edition cleans up some of its shortcomings and lets a new generation of players experience it for the first time. Inspired by old-school RTS games, Tempest Rising has its own unique style that manages to shine through all the nostalgia and comparisons to classics of the genre. Designed with younger players in mind, Disney Illusion Island is a colourful Metroidvania that’s devoid of combat.

Moral ambiguity usually amounts to whether something bad will happen now, or whether it might happen at a more severe scale later. Decisions culminate in fun ways, especially towards the end where sidequests and the critical path cleverly intersect. Nevertheless, it all builds towards a climax that, while satisfying, loses some of the ambiguity that seems to define the series.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Review

The thwack of the ball, the feeling of outmaneuvering a defender for the perfect chance, the pass slipped beautifully between another guy’s legends, reading the shot as a goalie and making the save. Bodies moving through space and time, and a ball connecting them. The beauty of soccer is you can play it anywhere; I once saw a guy covered in sweat dribbling a ball down a street in the Bronx.

You’ll get reminders when levels of certain things, like storage or food, are low, but you can typically restock your reserves quickly. Throughout my initial playthrough, I never felt like I was in danger of losing due to a lack of resources. The typical pressure of a survival game just wasn’t present for me as I played. Like in all the best RPGs, it’s not the world you hope to save that matters, but the frivolous jobs you do along the way. I remember a dubious situation between a Paradis woman and her weirdly adoring Xaurip admirers more vividly than any of the major plot beats. Likewise, visiting my companion Marius’s vanquished home village, crouched in the shadow of a giant volcano, was more impactful than finally confronting the fascistic antagonist for the first time.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is classic RGB like your orc mamma used to make. Stu relives the halcyon days when the RTS genre was fast, action packed and criminally addictive. While Kojima didn’t reveal anything specific about the game, he claimed that he was confident the title would be the “culmination” of his work. He described it as an interactive title that would also be a movie, aligning with his well-documented interest in film and production.

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery Of The Soulless Army Review

It’s unclear if this means that the project is both a game and a movie, or a game that is like a movie. Death Stranding was the first full game I ever reviewed for Digital Trends. Inspired by the Flannan Isles mystery, the game excels at creating a thick, oppressive atmosphere that clings to you long after you’ve closed the game. Merchants of Rosewall presents itself as a cute, pixel-drawn trading and management simulation, a blend of economic strategy and personality-based storytelling. And for a substantial portion of what it is, it succeeds in doing so. But even so, in the end, it doesn’t quite live up to its potential, leaving a lingering sense of disappointment unsatisfied.

MachineGames’ first game since finishing up its Wolfenstein reboots is another rollicking, nazi-punching adventure that brings the film hero to the AAA games era. It’s not only a big win for Indy fans, but for Xbox Games Studios that finally has a bonafide hit. And if you’re looking for an all-star cast, PlayStation released the game with the biggest names in Astro Bot a brilliant platformer that matches the quality of anything its rivals at Nintendo put ou,t. There are hundreds of collectible characters from across PlayStation’s biggest franchises to discover, making it quite literally a game chock-full of big names.

Mindless traipsing about in the gloom is kept to a minimum thanks to a convenient fast travel system, allowing me to hop between the base and any operational mining outpost or travel pylon I’ve established. Working outwards in this way turns this system into more than a convenient way to pop out, or get a headstart on further exploration. It’s my own self-made flag planted in the radioactive dirt, every bit of help I have proof of something I’ve personally achieved against the odds. The narrative journey you experience is well written, emotionally evocative, and showcases the consequences of difficult choices, especially when both options are less than ideal. It compelled me to think over the different aspects of surviving, how those decisions could effect the crew, and what I was willing to do as the leader to ensure survival for as many people as possible. The Alters is a story driven, survival game where the main character, Jan Dolski, is stranded on an unhospitable planet alone during Project Dolly.
