On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. Is improved force feedback and the same funny little collection of gyros and touchscreens carried over from the DualShock 4 really the next-gen difference? I’m not entirely sure, and it may well prove to be another false dawn that, like HD rumble on the Switch, is a pleasant addition that soon fades into the background. Explore four worlds, each one showcasing innovative gameplay using the new and versatile features of the PS5 DualSense™ wireless controller.

The interior display is four times the resolution of the original, and 3D audio adjusts with your head position. Eye tracking also allows for foveated rendering, where areas you aren’t looking at will not be given priority in order to optimize game performance. The PS5’s Pulse headset is a headset designed to use 3D audio with PS4 and PS5 games that support it, allowing for sounds to be heard as if all around the player, similar to a surround sound system. It also features two microphones that can cancel out background noises, and still has a 3.5mm jack to use as a standard headset. The DualShock 4 marked the first time the PlayStation controller was given a significant aesthetic redesign. The new Share Button, which let you take screenshots and record video, replaced the Select Button, Fortunately, almost all games moved the Select Button function to pressing down on the new touchpad.
The manta ray was the second tech demo available on the pack-in Demo 1 disc to showcase the console’s prowess, depicting a manta ray swimming in the ocean with a school of fish. In the Labo area is a Bot using a PS1 controller to drive a red car around him. This references Ridge Racer, released on the PS1 in 1994 and developed by Namco. The car being driven is the one of the game’s boxart, the F/A Fiera, also known as the Kamata Fiera. Once you get to the very top of Mt. Motherboard, on the right you can see a Bot in a white cloak fighting against the wind. The character is a White Cloak, unlocked by finding all the Symbols in the game, and the struggle against the snow refers to the famous snowstorm finale.

Tug on these and you’ll reveal the second artefact – the DualShock 2 controller. Right at the back of this straightforward platforming area, there’s a sunny platform with some wires to pull, which will reveal the first artefact of this area – the PSOne LCD Monitor. Immediately after the point with the giant yellow rolling tin that emerges from a corridor, you’ll reach a checkpoint on a grassy platform. From here, turn left and you’ll see a little pillar with a couple of wooden platforms on it. Beneath the original platform with the checkpoint on it is an alcove.
The history of the PlayStation brand is on full display in every level, as each area tracks one of Sony’s previous console generations. I won’t give anything away here, but just about every franchise that’s ever been important to PlayStation finds the spotlight during this adventure. Most surface in the form of Astro’s pals acting out famous scenes, and they’re a delight.
GPU Jungle is the fourth and final zone in the game, with Artefacts covering the PlayStation 4 era from 2013 to 2019. This zone’s suit is the Monkey Suit, which you control with the Adaptive Triggers and the SIXAXIS. Return to the same pier that you found the first correct starfish under and look towards the sandstorm, and you’ll see one just to the right of a palm tree nearby, which is the third starfish. The final starfish is at the end of the beach on the left side, a little underwater. The first starfish is under the pier immediately to the right of when the player first lands in the water from the slide. It will make a small noise through your controller when it is stepped on. The second one is near a much wider pier on the left side, just past it and to the left.

Just before it turns back into road, there’s a little icy road off to the left that’s marked with a danger sign. You’ll need to very carefully roll your way along this road as the first artefact is right at the end – the DualShock controller.
The speaker on the DualSense controller plays a lot of sounds out of it which is something I always enjoy and each one is done really well here to help add to the experience. The trophy hunters out there will even find 46 trophies here including a Platinum. It’s a very easy list and you’ll have a lot of fun obtaining this Platinum. Each of the four worlds are split up into four levels that are interconnected with each other. Two of these levels involve regular platforming whereas the other two involve a special power-up suit which makes use of the DualSense controller’s capabilities. Another example is the ball suit in which the player must swipe the touchpad to guide the ball.
